In Loving Memory: Michael Mumbo

It’s been difficult to put into words how we feel following the loss of our co-founder, leader and friend, Michael  Mumbo. In this blog, we honour his legacy as a person whose heart was bigger than himself, as we reflect on his life and continue to carry his vision forward.

Mike was a visionary leader, and we were privileged to work with him. He was passionate about education and carried a drive to bridge gaps in tech. Reflecting on the projects we did with Mike, we see the impact we made together; from Robotics, to Science Engagement Activities, to Teacher Professional Development and Child Online Safety. His gentle reminders of a job well done would always motivate us to keep up the good work. He believed in teamwork, and encouraged us to take up roles in the projects.

Beyond the work and projects, we will remember Mike for the bond he created with us. He was a friend and a great companion. It would always be evident when Mike’s presence graced the office. The office kitchen would be filled with sweet aromas, from ground nuts to plantains to sweet potatoes. He would always remind us,

“Before everything, eat first.”

He insisted that taking care of ourselves was the greatest task at hand, reminding us that productivity required us to be healthy and well.

Additionally, Mike would always encourage us that everything eventually works out and to take one day at a time.

“One Day at a Time” is what we will live by. We deeply miss Mike, but we find a fighting muscle in knowing he is still here with us, in every little thing that reminds us of him. We continue to walk in his footsteps towards completing the work he began.

We extend our appreciation to everyone who shared their memories of Mike with us on the padlet. May his memory continue to live on in each of us.
