Seed Science Launches the Michael Mumbo Award for Science Education to Inspire the Next Generation of African Scientists

[Kitale, Kenya – October 16, 2025] Seed Science has established the Michael Mumbo Award for Science Education to celebrate the life and legacy of Michael (Mike) Mumbo, an educator who believed that science comes alive when learners explore, question, and build solutions from their own communities. He passionately championed science learning and innovation across Africa.

Michael, who sadly passed away in April 2025, was greatly involved in Seed Science’s work, serving as a jury member for Seed Science Clubs and leading teacher training workshops in Tanzania.

Although Michael left us young, he did work we will never forget at local, regional and global levels. That’s why we introduced the award to foster his legacy.” Michele, President -Seed Science and National Geographic Explorer.

The Michael Mumbo Award, held virtually on September 19, 2025, brought together students from Seed Science Clubs across Africa to present their projects developed through hands-on learning activities, showcasing the power of curiosity and creativity in transforming simple ideas into real impact.

The jury included Forbah Sandra N., Founder and Director at BRIDGES and National Geographic Society explorer, Patrick Njoroge, Co-founder at Edutab Africa, and Graeme M G., Chief Strategy Officer at Science Bits. They judged projects presented by four student teams from Ghana, Uganda, and Madagascar.

The ExploreHome Madagascar team won the inaugural award, embodying Michael Mumbo’s belief in the power of science education. Lucas (Grade 9), Princia (Grade 8), and Fahedrena (Grade 7) from La Printaire School in Antana Nakiv Avarajan presented “A Journey with Water,” demonstrating the water cycle using recycled materials.

Thank you for taking a moment to honour Michael. I remember him as a vibrant soul who was naturally curious and one who impacted thousands of students through his work. His legacy will never be forgotten.” Patrick, co-founder, EduTab Africa.

We are humbled by the initiative Seed Science has taken in remembrance of our dear Michael Mumbo, who was a light-bearer in our family. God bless Seed Science.” Jared Otieno, family representative.

Seed Science aims to carry forward Michael’s legacy by nurturing young scientists and creating meaningful learning experiences across Africa. The award will be presented annually to recognise young innovators who are advancing science education across the continent.
