At Edutab Africa, we are dedicated to transforming education in rural primary and secondary schools across Kenya. We aim to empower teachers and students with innovative technological solutions that enhance learning outcomes. We have developed a comprehensive program that focuses on integrating PhET simulations. These are over 100 simulations of maths, physics, biology, and chemistry which are free online.  Through our initiatives, we aim to create an engaging and interactive learning environment, fostering enjoyment, deep understanding, and critical thinking skills among students.

Teacher training

We understand the importance of equipping teachers with the necessary skills to effectively incorporate PhET simulations into their lessons. Our professional development programs offer comprehensive teacher training, covering both the technical aspects of using the simulations and pedagogical approaches to maximize learning outcomes. Our team of educators and ICT support lead engaging PhET workshops and provide ongoing support to ensure continuous improvement and collaboration among teachers on the use of these simulations.

Implementation Strategy:

Whole-Class Implementation

To ensure widespread access and participation, we have implemented a whole class strategy in rural primary schools. By utilizing interactive displays, using a projector, and a computer, we enable the entire class to engage with the PhET simulations. This collaborative approach promotes communication, teamwork, and critical thinking among students. We guide teachers on integrating the simulations into their lesson plans, fostering interactive discussions and reflective activities that solidify students’ knowledge.

Small Groups Interaction

In schools where government-provided tablets are available, we leverage these resources to enhance individual student experiences. Students can access PhET simulations on their tablets, allowing for personalized learning and independent exploration. Teachers assign specific simulations as homework or independent study tasks, providing feedback and clarification during class time. This approach encourages student engagement, facilitates self-directed learning, and strengthens students’ understanding of scientific concepts.

Impact and Benefits

Our initiatives have significantly impacted students’ learning experiences in rural primary schools as well as a few other secondary schools in Kenya. Teachers have reported that by incorporating PhET simulations into the curriculum, they have witnessed increased student engagement, as the interactive and visually engaging simulations capture students’ attention and make learning enjoyable. Students have demonstrated an enhanced understanding of complex scientific concepts, as the simulations bridge the gap between theory and practice. This has resulted in improved retention and a deeper appreciation for science and mathematics.

We continuously strive to improve and refine our program to better serve the needs of primary schools, underserved with learning resources. We actively seek feedback from teachers, students, and parents to ensure the localization and cultural relevance of our PhET simulations. We encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing among teachers through our online forums and workshops, fostering a vibrant community of practice.
